Credit Counseling Service
Credit counseling services are companies that advise consumers on how to manage money and debts, develop a budget, and usually offer free educational materials and workshops. Their counselors are certified and trained in the areas of consumer credit, money and debt management, and budgeting. Counselors discuss and evaluate a consumer's financial situation and help develop a personalized plan to solve money problems.
On April 20th, 2005, President George Bush signed the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 into law. Effective on October 17, 2005, the new bankruptcy law requires mandatory credit counseling for consumer debtors within 180 days of filing the petition. Debtors must also complete a personal financial management education course before they can obtain a discharge. The United States Trustee Program maintains a list of approved credit counseling agencies.
